Reichshof Hamburg illustration

Since 1910, Reichshof Hamburg has been a symbol of timeless hospitality in the heart of the city. Scroll down to learn more about our rich history.

The Beginning

In 1906 Anton-Emil and Martha Langer went for a walk to see the new railway station being built when they spotted a plot of land. Four years later the Reichshof Hotel opened at that spot – the first of its kind to introduce a flat rate including breakfast. In 1910 it was not only the biggest hotel in Germany but also featured modern technology: running water, electricity, telephones in every room, private bathrooms in 50 rooms, a car garage, and hydraulic elevators.

The picture shows the hotel’s lobby around 1912, two years after the hotel’s opening.

The 1920s

In the 1920s the Reichshof Hamburg underwent its first big renovation: the restaurant as well as the bar were installed and even more rooms added.

Want to be transported back in time? Have a look at the pictures. The first one shows the hotel’s front in 1920 while the second picture features the hotel’s restaurant, which was back then known as ‘Kaffee Reichshof’. The third picture shows the hotel’s bar in 1935, it depicts the typical style of a Roaring Twenties bar.

Owned and Managed by Family

After the death of the hotel’s founder Anton-Emil Langer, his wife Martha took over the management of the Reichshof Hamburg. With her strong personality, Martha Langer stood at the hotel’s helm for over four decades, leading it through tumultuous as well as prosperous times. Her son Herbert-Emil Langer would later on take over together with his wife Ingeborg who would continue on managing the hotel after his death up until 1989.

The pictures show the hotel’s restaurant in 1935 and around 1955. Many of its historical elements can still be found today if you dine at Stadt Restaurant.
